Five Questions from [info]palemovie

1) Were your life a TV show, what would be the theme song?
Superchunk - Art Class ... not really that relevant but it is my favorite song.

2) You have, in the past year, decided to go to graduate school for your MLS. What made you decide on a career in a field you have no prior experience in?
Actually, the idea came to me around March of 2003 as a suggestion from my supervisor at my internship in Chicago. My internship was based around searching the library, pulling stuff and putting together a book of useful materials so she thought I'd make a good librarian. I applied to work at the Albion library but between classes, swimming, lifeguarding and not being there every weekend there wasn't a lot of time left in my schedule and apparently the time I had available didn't fit their need. Technically I do have SOME prior experience as a teacher in a school with NO librarian. I guess the reason I decided to go for the MLIS was that I knew after teaching 4th grade I wanted something different but still in the school setting... and as I said after working in a school w/o a SLMS I realized that is what I want to do. Also I've always loved Educating Esme. And I had a lot of peer pressure. From you. (just kidding).

3) What is the greatest book nobody else has read?

Hello, Fruit Face by Claudia Strand

I'd also like to highly recommend Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides because I just finished it and LOVED it. I wouldn't call this a "book nobody else has read" though, because lots of people have.

4) Where do we go now, sweet child o'mine?

5) What joke makes you laugh every single time?

There's a joke well known among a small circle of Alboners called "Cinderblock". In fact, if you just say "cinderblock" in a certain way I'll laugh. The joke itself requires a live in-person telling to be funny, otherwise I'd transcribe it here. Also - it's a terrible terrible horrible makes-you-feel-like-a-very-bad-person joke.

NOW I WANT TO SAY "CINDERBLOCK" TO BEN AND SEE IF HE GETS IT. But then I'd feel like a weirdo.

Also: interview me! (But I'm just gonna answer in comments - not a post.)

I'm not certain Ben has heard the cinderblock joke.

1. Top five favorite books, of course.

2. Your hair has been many different colors it seems... what was your favorite?

3. Tell me about a favorite band... not your favorite band/artist of all time - but a current favorite.

4. Describe the perfect job (ie. our library - haha)

5. Write about a childhood memory that you have never wrote about previously in livejournal.

1. Oh dear. I've thought about this many-a-times. I think these are of "all-time"...at least the top three.
1. His Dark Materials
2. Snow Crash
3. Everything Is Illuminated
4. You Shall Know Our Velocity!
5. Cosmos
Honorable mentions: Killing Yourself To Live, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh, and BUtterfield 8. I LIKE SO MANY, LAUREN.

2. My favorite is the way it is now...this dark golden blonde with light blonde highlights/chunking. It looks natural and I like it SO MUCH.

I also enjoyed when my hair was brown/orange/yellow/purple...which looked surprisingly good. I'd never do black AGAIN.

3. Currently enjoying the HECK out of Gogol Bordello, Parenthetical Girls, anddd the new Arcade Fire record.

4. BESIDES OUR LIBRARY, I would love to be someone at NASA doing something important. Maybe be the librarian for NASA!

5. My cousin Tomy used to ride dirt bikes all the time. He was basically my hero. I went to a bunch of his races and got really into motocross because of all of this happening. Once we were at a race together and he placed 2nd in one race and 5th in another, which was his best at the time. He signed the bottom of the 2nd place trophy and gave it to me. That meant so much to me at the time. Plus, he always looked out for me...and introduced me to the Pumpkins in third grade. :D

I agree that picking 5 favorite books is super hard. I haven't read ANY of your top 5! So I'll have to add them to my list of books to read.

I'm seeing Parenthetical Girls on Wednesday :) They were one of the four bands at my "favorite concert of all time"!

Yeah, what was especially cool to me is that the narrator's life was VERY similar to my mom's. My grandma's parents came to Detroit from Greece (but they were not brother and sister). My grandma's dad had a "cony island" type restaurant in Detroit called the Queen Bee (a LOT like the Zebra room!) - it's not around any more. My grandma used to work in the Queen Bee and that's where she met my grandpa. My mom grew up in Detroit until they moved to Bloomfield Hills a few years before the time the narrator's family moved to Grosse Pointe AND my Grandpa served in the Army on the west coast and he owned his own business just like the narrator's dad. Also my Grandma's father was quiet and not very present in the raising of his children (which was said of Lefty) and he died sorta young-ish (when my mom was little) but in my family story after my grandma's father died, my grandma's mother married her dead husband's brother - so there is a little bit of that weirdo incest factor, but not nearly as much. Oh and my grandma's mother lived with my mom's family just like Desdemona did.

The similarities are just crazy to me :)

Whoa, it's really weird because you posted that picture of Hello, Fruit Face! and then a student told me about Achimbol...whatever his name is on the SAME DAY, even though we weren't talking about the book and I had never heard of this artist before. A REALLY STRANGE COINCIDENCE!
